Ministry for National Integration
The Brazilian semi-arid is home to peculiarities no other similar area in the planet possesses, with emphasis given to its heavy population densification. It is a mosaic of sub-spaces with a complex social situation and which has historically challenged public policy in the search for a solution.
Recognizing these specificities is the first step toward overcoming the impoverishment found in that part of the Brazilian territory, enabling a sustainable development process which can bring dignity to these populations. The Ministry for National Integration offers several programs reaching all of the national territory, contributing toward an integrated and coherent partnership with the Federal Government and cooperation among government agencies, and between government and society.
Examples of these instruments are:
- the CONVIVER Program, aimed at reducing socio-economic vulnerabilities of regional and sub-regional spaces with higher rates of droughts;
- the São Francisco River Basin Revitalization Program, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, with implementation of a development policy based on socio-environmental sustainability as its main objective;
- the Semi-Arid Proágua, with the goal of increasing supply of high quality water for the Brazilian Semi-arid;
- the Program for Promotion of Sustainability of Sub-regional Spaces – PROMESO, aimed at increasing autonomy and sustainability of sub-regional spaces by means of social organization, strengthening of its productive base and development of its endogenous potential;
- the Program for Productive Organization of Communities – PRODUZIR, targeting strengthened human and social resources in communities located in the economic depression and stagnated areas, seeking its competitive productive insertion into the market;
- Program for Development of Irrigated Agriculture, which, in addition to enabling diversified crops and increasing productivity of public irrigation projects, acts as a catalyst for all economic activities related to agricultural and agro-industrial production, generating more employment and income;
- Management Transfer Program for Public Irrigation Perimeters, seeking self-managed irrigated perimeters implemented by the Federal Government.
This collection of activities, while fostering development, contains explicit intentions to break historic processes which have led the semi-arid to this situation o poverty, through catalyzed economic and social relations in the different subregions found in the area. The “Northeast & Cerrado Room” at the Exposustentat is thus an opportunity to demonstrate this regional energy, which has been supported by coordinated Federal Government actions in the Brazilian Northeast and its semi-arid region.
