Agrarian Development Ministry
Family agriculture in Brazil is made up of 4.14 million rural estates, 2.06 million of which are located in the northeast. Albeit taking up a mere 30% of the occupied area, it corresponds to 85% of all rural establishments, 89% of the field labor and 38% of the Gross Production Income.
Family agriculture thus consists of a fundamental segment for sustainable development in the rural environment. Potential for insertion into the national and international markets is expressive and family agriculture has substantial support from the Brazilian Government for seeking partnerships aimed at marketing of its products. Promotion of sustainable family production is part of the development strategy adopted by the Territorial Development Secretariat and the Family Agriculture Secretariat of the Ministry of Agrarian Development.
The Northeast & Cerrado Room represents for MDA a privileged space for promotion of the concept of sustainability, encouragement to the interaction among the several stakeholders who promote social and environmental responsibility, as well as insertion of family agriculture in the sustainable products and services markets.
Certain of the success of the Northeast & Cerrado Room at the Exposustentat 2007, the Ministry of Agrarian Development supports this initiative which will bring sustainable production of Brazilian family agriculture into the limelight both nationally and internationally.
