Family Agriculture, Agroecology and Market Project

From the perspective of family sustainable development in Northeastern Brazil, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has supported since 2006 the “Family Agriculture, Agroecology and Market” project, co-financed by the European Union for five years. Its objective is improved quality of life, food sovereignty and empowerment of the population in the Northeast semi-arid regions, by means of strengthening ecological and sustainable family agriculture. Social organization strengthening is therefore sought, in addition to capacity-building of family farmers in production, planning, management and marketing of organic products, with higher participation by women and young adults.

Hoping to improve access to the markets of ecologic products from family agriculture, the project contributes toward creation of an agroecologic network of family producers, at a first moment in Ceará, with regional nuclei in Northern Itapipoca, Central hinterlands and Baturité Massif, initially in partnership with the NGO Cetra and the Ceará Federal University Agrarian Science Center (CCA/UFC), also with support from other local and state partners.

The “Northeast & Cerrado Room” at ExpoSustentat 2007 resulting from a dialog between the German cooperation and partner institutions active in the Northeast and in the Cerrado is part of the planned project activities for improved access to the markets, being both a challenge and an encouragement for group organization aiming at fulfilling market demands regarding quality, production scale, regular delivery and product presentation. Thus, the “Northeast & Cerrado Room” creates an opportunity for family agriculture, and it will contribute toward improved quality of life in the region and its inclusion in the growing market of organic products.

Depoimento
“A produção integrada realizada pela agricultura familiar considera o ambiente natural, as potencialidades locais e as limitações e particularidades de cada região. Com esse respeito ao meio ambiente, é possível garantir produtividade às futuras gerações”.
