ISPN-PPP-ECOS
Small Ecosocial Projects Program (GEF/UNDP/ISPN)
The PPP-ECOS supports projects developed by non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations in the Cerrado. In its 13 years of existence, 236 projects have been supported in 14 different states. It is sponsored by the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Fund’s Small Grants Programme (SGP), with a National Steering Committee, its Technical-Administrative Coordination is carried out by the Institute for Society, Population and Nature (ISPN).
The Cerrado, richest savanna in biodiversity in the world, shelters a third of the Brazilian biota and 5% of the planet’s fauna and flora. It is also the birthplace of the main Brazilian waterways. It has, however, been under heavy threat by the expanding agricultural frontier. Over half has been cleared and approximately 3% of what is left is deforested each year.
In addition to the exuberant biodiversity and water resources, Cerrado devastation threatens the basis for material and cultural survival of a large variety of local communities and traditional populations.
The PPP-ECOS supports sustainable livelihood projects: agroextractivism, native beekeeping, sustainable family agriculture, wild animal breeding, medicinal plants, ecotourism and handicrafts, among others. It proves that sustainable use of the biodiversity enables promotion of environmental conservation in alliance with generation of income and food security.
