Currently considered the richest savanna in the world in terms of biodiversity, the Brazilian Cerrado is home to over 10,000 plant species and 1,575 varieties of animals in its wide variety of landscapes. Between plateaus and valleys, with vegetation varying from dry fields to riparian woods, this biome is spread over a vast 2 million square kilometers (Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Piauí and Distrito Federal, in addition to parts of seven other Brazilian states), covering a fourth of the national territory.

The Cerrado is currently subject to heavy pressure from disorderly expansion of the agricultural frontier, which has already consumed approximately half of the region. The current devastation threatens not only the headwaters of the main Brazilian watersheds, but also the basis for cultural and material survival of wild collectors, indigenous groups, descendants of maroon quilombola communities and family farmer-collectors, whose source of subsistence and income is entirely dependent on the use of its natural resources.

Baru – Baruzeiro

(Dipteryx alata)

Brazilian Cerrado fruit tree, with a nut rich in flavor and nutritional properties. With abundant protein, fibers, magnesium, potassium and iron, it also has high energetic value. Baru is under severe threat due to deforestation for grain farming, cattle raising and use of its wood.

Use of the fruit contributes to conservation of both the species and the Cerrado, in addition to improving the quality of life in communities involved in collection and processing.
