GTZ

German Technical Cooperation Agency

GTZ, or German Cooperation Agency, in its Northeast Program, is a partnership involving the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), Ministry of Environment (MMA), organized civil society around the Semi-Arid Coalition (ASA), the Union movement and other stakeholders, aiming at combating degradation of dry lands and implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Desertification, in which Brazil participates since 1997. In Brazil, this convention was put into practice through the National Action Program (PAN-Brasil) which was finalized in 2004.

Agrarian Development Ministry
Family agriculture in Brazil is made up of 4.14 million rural estates, 2.06 million of which are located in the northeast. Albeit taking up a mere 30% of the occupied area, it corresponds to 85% of all rural establishments, 89% of the field labor and 38% of the Gross Production Income.

The Dom Hélder Câmara Project is connected with the Secretariat of Territorial Development – SDT, in the Ministry of Agrarian Development – MDA, providing technical assistance for over 11,000 small farmer families and settlers in 8 territories of 6 states in the Northeast. It is focused on local, participative and fair trade processes and sustainability.

The Northeast Semi-Arid Agrarian Reform Settlement Sustainable Development Project – Dom Helder Câmara Project (PDHC), is a government project created from an International Loan deal between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the International Development Fund – FIDA, and is connected to the Ministry of Agrarian Development’s Territorial Development Secretariat.

DED

German Technical and Social Cooperation Service

The DED supports sustainable development projects, mainly through qualified personnel (cooperants), in partnership with government and civil society agencies. Since the start of its activities in Brazil in 1966, the DED has been engaged in the Northeast, with Rural Development in the scope of family agriculture as one the main activities in the Program. The strategic focal areas are: combating desertification, biodiesel and access to alternative markets.

KAS - Konrad Adenauer Foundation

Family Agriculture, Agroecology and Market Project

From the perspective of family sustainable development in Northeastern Brazil, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has supported since 2006 the “Family Agriculture, Agroecology and Market” project, co-financed by the European Union for five years. Its objective is improved quality of life, food sovereignty and empowerment of the population in the Northeast semi-arid regions, by means of strengthening ecological and sustainable family agriculture. Social organization strengthening is therefore sought, in addition to capacity-building of family farmers in production, planning, management and marketing of organic products, with higher participation by women and young adults. ISPN-PPP-ECOS

Small Ecosocial Projects Program (GEF/UNDP/ISPN)
The PPP-ECOS supports projects developed by non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations in the Cerrado. In its 13 years of existence, 236 projects have been supported in 14 different states. It is sponsored by the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Development Fund’s Small Grants Programme (SGP), with a National Steering Committee, its Technical-Administrative Coordination is carried out by the Institute for Society, Population and Nature (ISPN). CODEVASF

Codevasf, by means of the Amanhã (Tomorrow) Project, is in charge of a social program aimed at fostering organization and capacity-building of the rural youth through partnerships in the São Francisco and Paraníba Valleys, preparing these young men and women to be independent and competent in agricultural and agro-industrial enterprises, providing alternatives for market entry, in accordance with Federal Government Social Programs, a top priority.
